Allan Køster forsker i sorg fra et eksistentielt perspektiv, hvor fokus er på sorgen som levet erfaring. Han arbejder med forskellige temaer såsom: Hvad kendetegner vores forhold til døden? Hvad er sorg som fænomen? Hvordan finder vi trøst i mødet med store uigenkaldelige tab? Hvad kendetegner vores relation til de afdøde? Hvordan er sorgens følelsesmæssige karakter? Etiske problemstillinger i sorgen – såsom hvilke tab der bør anerkendes som sorgfulde?

Allan publicerer løbende i internationale tidsskrifter om sorg og andre former for både somatisk og psykiatrisk lidelse. Han er keynote på nationale og internationale konferencer og deltager desuden i podcasts og lignende medieformater, både i Danmark og i udlandet. Metodisk arbejder Allan fænomenologisk og med stor anvendelse af kvalitative metoder. Derudover har han erfaring med psykoterapi og en klinisk specialistuddannelse i narrativ terapi.
